My mission
in painting Frigate's Flight was to recreate the
soaring experience I had while observing Frigate Birds in
the vast sky over the Panama Canal. The greatest challenge
of creating such a large painting of sky, was to work quickly
with a very large brush over a broad area before the paint
dried. Most of the work went into preliminary planning for
efficient access to the materials needed and an undisturbed
block of time, as well as deliberation of the logistics
of my studio space. Once delving into the painting process
I was committed to work straight through to the finish.
There was no turning back or pausing to contemplate changes.
Such is the property of watercolor. It is surrounded by
a round-faced silver metal frame, without matting.
