Autumn Maple

My typical method of painting foreground first and background last was reversed for painting Autum Maple. This is because I generally work from light to dark. In addition, painting the bark of the maple required mixing large quantities of dark pigments to be applied with broad strokes. The paint was allowed to dry and then the areas that required lightening were rewetted and lifted with a dry brush or cloth, leaving subtle stains of pigment. This painting was purchased for Northwestern Mutual Life's Executive Collection.
